2 1/2 year old up every night

Posted by Cranky Mom on May 28, 2002 at 19:28:31:

I am on the verge of collapse. I have two active boys, a 6 month old (who is not a problem sleeper) and a 2 1/2 year old. My older one wakes almost every night at around the same time (1:30- 3:00am) screaming and it lasts from 15 - 30 minutes, sometimes 3 times a night. Sometimes he runs into our room, other times he is kneeling on his bed crying and screaming. I have read all there is about nightmares and night terrors. My problem- I don't think his symptoms match either. He has no recollection of the events (as much as we can get out of a kid his age) but he knows who we are when we come into the room. He recognizes Mom and Dad, can raise his arms, nod his head, etc. when we ask him to do things (trying to find out if he is having growing pains).
We went to the doctor who told us that is sounds like night terrors and he will grow out of them by the time he is 4. - that is another 1 1/2 years of no sleep. He also mentioned it might be linked to his intellegence (he has very advanced for his age) We have tried the bed routine thing, no TV at all thing, night light to no avail.

We hit him with a lot all at once 6 months ago (moved to a new house, he got his own room- used to sleep in our room, a brand new big boy bed and a new brother. He was absolutely fine for the first 3 months, now things are horrible.
I just want to know if there is anything else I can do. My husband and I would like to have a night of uninterrupted sleep some time soon- the baby sleeps through all the crying, thank goodness!
Thanks for your input!
