Adult Night Terrors

Posted by DazedandConfused on June 09, 2002 at 13:23:49:

Hi, I realize that this discussion board is primarily for children, but I am one of the rare adults suffering from Night Terrors, and I was told this was the best place to post for suggestions, concerns, etc. Night terrors seem to run in my family (my mother still sufers from them and she's in her 40's.) I am 25, in pretty good health (I do have GERD, but it's controlled by prevacid), and I was recently married (our 1 year anniversary is coming up in August.) My earliest remembered night terrors started in puberty (although they may have bene there earlier and I can't remember), and have come and gone ever since. My wife has found that I am having bad night terrors (screaming, jumping out of bed, running into walls, once even choking my wife) once to two times a month. I never remember these events, although sometimes I wake up with tell tale sore muscles and or sore throat (from screaming) that let me know I've had one. She reports that I appear to be having nightmares much more often (at least weekly), but I rarely remember any of these either, so maybe these are also night terrors? My mother was officially diagnosed years ago (around 10yrs) but there seemed to be little in the way of treatment at the time. Is there anything better out there now? I am seeing a doctor who has referred me to a sleep specialist, but the appointment won't be for month, and I could use some help now.
Thanks,
Jason
