Help! My toddler wont sleep

My 2 1/2 year old son will NOT sleep at night... I put him to bed about 9pm and he will sleep for a while but he very very frenquently wakes up screaming and this will go on for hours. he will fall asleep for a little while and wake up again. ive tried everything. could he have insomnia? and if so does anyone know what i can do about it?
