he could possibly be having night terrors, but then he would usually not wake if left to himself; also other nocturnal events (try videotaping him for the first couple hours sleep so you can capture his waking; you or doctor may spot something else going on). Also, speak to his pediatrician about your concerns. One thing he may suggest, when appropriate, some doctors will prescribe a SHORT - like 1-2 weeks - course of a mild drug (eg. Benadryl) for a child to break the sleep cycle they're caught in. This may be appropriate for your son; however, the doctor may feel he is too young at this point, I don't know.
