How drastic is the hair pulling? I used to chew my hair as a child for a couple years, and then broke the habit (they cut my hair short :). On the other hand, there is a behavioural 'disorder' that results people who 'pull their hair' (the fact that he does it in his sleep suggests it's less voluntary). Literally pulling out strands and chunks of hair. Many don't know they are doing it until they have handful of hair. Maybe speak to his pediatrician about this possibility if it's worrisome. You could probably find out more by looking in the areas of OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder) because it is in the same spectrum and 'hair-pulling' probably won't return enough relevant sites in a search. The other reason I mention this is because I believe there's a brain chemistry relation there (why it's in the same spectrum) and there is a greater incidence of sleep-disorders. So while your son may possibly have a sleep-disorder of some sort, the hair-pulling can be a separate issue as well. It could also be nothing significant, too; only you and his PCP can assess what's really happening.

Hope that can get you started getting some information or answers for your questions. Good luck.
