Mel,
One more thing. My son is in the process of being diagnosed with narcolepsy. This is VERY difficult to diagnose in a child in the absence of cateplexy because the symptoms are often subtle for the first few years. MANY narcoleptics report symptoms in their childhood (commonly 9-13 years old) but most do not receive a diagnosis until their late teens or into their 30's.
It is a remote possiblility, because only a few disorders truly inhibit rest during sleep. Obstructive breathing is a physical problem, most others originate with neurology of sleep. Most importantly, only a sleep study will be able to assess what's happening. She should be referred to a PEDIATRIC sleep center. Symptoms of several sleep problems manifest differently in children than in adults, so it's important they have training and experience with pediatric sleep disorders. But I would insist, as some difficulties have a large impact on quality of life without proper support.
