just as an aside, my son was put on a trial of clonazepam. It's an anti-convulsant (like for epilepsy) and an anti-anxiety. But it also supresses some of the REM and regulates sleep. From the first night he took it, his awakenings essentially stopped - note: his problems are based in neurology, not obstructive breathing. It was a very low dose, 90% cleared from system in 24 hours. It also shouldn't be taken by anyone with liver problems. It turns out my son was sensitized and had a strong allergic reaction to it after a couple weeks, but that's quite rare I think. Many ppl take it and the side effects are apparently minor.
I was offered a choice between melatonin and the clonazepam.

Just a thought for further information.
