Posted by MARGNIM on August 28, 2002 at 12:41:43:My 9 year old son has been "headbanging" since he was 15 months old. We have been to doctors/peadiatrician/dietician etc and have simply been told that there is nothing medically wrong with him and that he should grow out of it. However as he gets older he can bang harder and noisier and my husband and I rarely get a full night sleep because of this.
Recently, as well as head banging and body rocking, he has started to bang his leg on the bed. Although this isn't as worrying as banging his head the noise can be very disturbing.
All of this is done on the mattress or pillow and he never does this when awake, although I think it happens when he is in a lighter sleep.
We think that food colourings may aggravate the situation but have been unable to prove or disprove this.
I have read that if a child doesn't outgrow this by 4 or 5 it may be a sign of psychological problems. But in all other ways my son is a healthy happy boy.
I am now concerned after reading other comments on this site that he may not grow out of it as there seems to be a lot of adults with this problem.
Any help or advice would be appreciated
