As a note to both of you:

Very often at this age, children develop fears of 'monsters' etc. While in most cases they overcome those fears as they mature, very rarely they do, in fact, 'see' or 'hear' the monsters or animals or other frightening events. Keep in mind that this is rare, but it is a hypnogogic hallucination (occuring while falling asleep/waking) and indicative of sleep deprivation. (there are universal hallucinations experienced by everyone; eg. feeling of falling, then startling awake)

This is extremely hard to identify in children, but claims such as these in combination with: ADD symptoms (inattentive, impulsive, hyperactive outside normal for their age group), snoring, allergies, chronic sinus infections, excessive napping - should be brought to the pediatrician's attention. Restless Leg Syndrome/PLMD, Children's Sleep Apnea, and Narcolepsy can all cause sleep deprivation in children and the resulting symptoms. Most often, it is Apnea/Sleep Disordered Breathing (80%) that is the cause for these cases. A child who does have any or either of these will benefit from appropriate treatment.
