This sounds quite unusual to me, and I wonder how his pediatrician has responded for these concerns.

1. has he been checked for reflux? for nighttime reflux?
2. has he ever had an EEG? the waking events may possibly be related to nocturnal seizures or similar. If you look up night terrors (which generally apply to toddlers), you'll see how the crying/terror/inconsolable can occur in the night. While what you describe would be FAR outside of normal as terrors, both night terrors and seizures are based in neurology. Since they can cause these kind of symptoms, an EEG or pediatric neurology evaluation may help.

What strikes me is his unwillingness to be held and extreme sensitivity to sound and touch. There is such a thing is a Sensory Disorder. I can't remember the name, but essentially extreme sensitivity with one or more of the senses. you could probably get some information by searching under 'pervasive development disorder', 'Tourettes', and 'autism' DON'T get scared - I'm only listing these because elements of that sensitivity are part of those disorders too, so it's easier to find information and links.

Finally, I would suggest going to the MedHelp international site, where a doctor will answer questions posted by parents such as yourself.

There is a limit of 2 questions per day so it is sometimes difficult to post, but early mornings seem to work best. The link is for behavioural health, but he would be able to suggest whether this is truly outside of normal behaviour, and perhaps some strategies to ease the situation for the whole family.

good luck
