3 yr. old wakes during night

Since we took our son's pacifier away 2 months ago we haven't had a good nights rest. He wakes up every night, comes down to our bedroom and crawls in bed with us. We take him back each night. We have used rewards for staying in his bed, punishments for getting up (spankings, no cartoons etc), locking the door, keeping the door open and nothing seems to work. Tonight I am going to "camp out" in front of his door. Does anyone have any helpful advice. Ferber worked as a baby for him but not now. We are at our wits end!
