Does sound like it could be night terrors except for the fact that you say he doesn't go through this until about 4:30. I have a grandson which I am raising that has suffered from night terrors for about 4 yrs. now. They usually start 45 min. to an hour after falling asleep and can continue every hr. or so for about 6 hrs. When you are having a night terror it onlly aggrivates the child if you try to console him. The only thing you can do is be sure they don't hurt themselves. If this child has a breathing problem......that can also add to the night terrors if he is suffering from them. Any noise or interuption in sleep can throw them into a night terror. You should really look up sleep disorders on the computer and try to compare the symptoms. Sleep apnea could also be a posibility. When it was discovered that my grandson had night terrors his physician told me to buy a book out by Dr.Richard Ferber on sleep disorders. It really was very informative.Night terrors are very similar to nightmares. Only night terrors are not remembered in the morning or the incidents. And you definatly cannot console the child. It will make them thrash out more at you. They have no idea what their doing though. It will be hard to distinguish this with your son because hes so young. He won't be able to tell you if its a scarey dream or he has no idea what your talking about. Start with researching the web for what it could be by his symptoms and take it from there. I've been through cat scans, sleep studies, and now that he hasn't grown out of them yet(he should of about the age of 5)........I'm thinking of having his adnoids removed because I think it may be throwing him into some of these terrors. The cat scan yrs. ago showed very enlarged adnoids but his Dr. has never suggested them being removed. I guess sometimes we have to figure these things out ourselves and do what we think is best. Good luck to you and feel free to write back through this site if you need more info. I have had lots of expierience with night terrors if thats what it turns out to be.
