Problems breathing during sleep cause sweating. It doesn't have to include OSA (stop breating) just extra effort due to a narrow airway.

I would have him checked out at a children's sleep lab and find out what it going on. The other option if a heart problem, and they would find that also if it was occuring during sleep.
