This is not normal. With adults a pause in breathing only has to last 10 seconds based on two breaths. With infants it can be a little as 2-3 seconds to be called an apnea. If he is breathing 30 breaths per minute then a 4 second pause is considered an apnea.

This is an important time in your child's development and for a 4 year old I would call this severe sleep apnea. You should see a pediatric sleep specialist asap. Do not listen to his current doctor. Sweating is a major indicator of OSA and can have a major effect on the brains and hearts development.
