Posted by nzgal on January 06, 2008 at 12:38:33:Our nearly 3 year old son has not slept through the night since he was 18 months old and was ill with norovirus. In November he had his tonsils and adenoids removed, as they were 'enormous' according to the surgeon and he suffered from sleep apnoea as a result. Unfortunately the day after he had them removed he suffered a post tosillectomy haemorrhage and he had to have emergency surgery to cauterise the bleeder. He has been seen by the specialist again to check his throat and it is all healing up fine, however he is still not sleeping through the night! The specialist suggested that he coudl be suffering nightmares as a result of the surgery, however, it really has reached the point of the ridiculous.
He goes to sleep really well at night anywhere between 6.30 and 7pm - he does not have an afternoon nap anymore. But he will then wake up anywhere between 9.30 and 11pm and come out to find us or try to get into bed with us. We have been taking him back to his bed and staying with him until he goes back to sleep but he will be back into us about an hour later. This can be repeated several times a night and has been going on for weeks now.
Prior to this he was coming through to us every night and sleeping in our bed - we both work full time and it became easier to let him sleep with us so we got some sleep before heading to stressful jobs in the morning! I know we really made a rod for our own backs!
However, the time has come to try and get him to sleep in his own bed and to sleep continuously through the night. If anyone has any ideas of what may work we'd love to hear them. He's a really happy little boy, he just won't sleep!
