Hi there -
Brand new to this forum. Would love to talk to other parents whose kids may have plmd and or rls. My 8 yr old son has had various problems sleeping since birth. Went through the classic night terror stage til 4 yrs. At 5 he began to sleep walk a lot. That is when we noticed the movement disorder. He has had 3 sleep studies in 3 yrs. All were conclusive for plmd. Now they say rls as well. We have tried Clonazepam, which made him very sleepy the next day, Mirapex which made the movement even more exaggerated, and a combo of Mirapex and Restoril which helped for a while, but not consistantly. They also gave him a whole other list of side effects. We finally see a great pediatric sleep specialist after a very long road of doctors who made me feel crazy, and brushed this off as not a big deal. We have just started an iron supplement and are hoping for the best. I'd love to help others as well as hear what others are doing for this. I should also mention that we did uncover a family history of males with sleep issues; my father, nephew and 2 male cousins on the same side of the family. I do believe in my son's case that it is hereditary which gives me a little comfort. Lastly, my son also has confusional arousals, still sleepwalks at times and teeth grinds. I know there are may parents out there that must feel the same frustration I do in trying to help their children. Please write if this sounds like you. THANKS!!
