8 year old can't stay asleep

I'm hoping there is someone out there who may have some insight. My son is 8 years old. He has NEVER been a good sleeper. The pattern has always been the same. He usually falls asleep ok, but will awaken 5, 6, 7 times per night and is only able to relax and sleep the rest of the night through in bed with me &/or my husband. We have tried positive reinforcement techniques (charts, rewards, etc) countless times with little to no success. My son is a highly gifted child with generalized anxiety disorder and some OCD tendencies. I had thought that issues of anxiety were driving the sleep problems, but now I'm wondering if that's not it. I don't know much about sleep cycles, but now I'm wondering if he is not getting ito a deep REM sleep, and that may be contributing to the problem. He (and I) are constantly sleep deprived. We have always been opposed to meds, but no0w I'm not sure. Anyone have any suggestions???
