Sounds like a sleep disorder may be happening. Sleep deprivation can cause all types of symptoms similar to ADHD, OCD, etc. There are two ways sleep deprivation occurs. One is not giving yourself enough time to get the sleep you need, the other is through a sleep disorder which can be physical or a psychological problem.
Try watching him sleep, a video would be better.
If he is making any noise while sleeping, moving around a lot, sweating, or making extra effort to breath you should take him to a pediatric sleep specialist who is boarded in sleep medicine. Taking care of these problems early is very important.
Also if your child has a small recessed chin it is probably caused by the sleep apnea. The result will be a problem with the tongue not having enough room in the mouth during sleep and it will be sucked into the airway causing sleep apnea.
There are other sleep disorders that can cause sleep loss and should be checked for, however, difficulty breathing during sleep is very common and has a hereditary factor.
If your child is sleeping like a baby, no problems, then the problem is behavioral. There are psychologist who are boarded in sleep that can help with this issue.
Best wishes,
