I also have a 5yo who is a problem to sleep. Until he was almost 3 he would hijack me to his bed several times every night, and only fall asleep if I was there. We saw a Child Bearing Specialist/Counselor and she walked us through getting him to sleep by himself. But we noticed he was still waking up several times every night. He had his adenoids out @ 3yo and sleep better for a while. Starter sleeping badly again, and snoring, about a year or so latter and about 6 months ago he had his tonsils and adenoids (that grew back) removed. His sleep improved a lot, but still giving us a really hard time to go to sleep and breathing through his mouth. We took him to a sleep doctor and he prescribed a sleep study, witch we just had, and sent him to an allergist.
We found out he is highly allergic to dust mites, and started treating it, his behavior and sleep are already improving.

I'm sorry for the long story, I just wanted to point that you need to seek for professional help. Sleep is very important for a child. I could see my son's growth spike up, his eating ans his behavior get better every time his sleep improves. You need to discuss this with his pediatrician, ask the Doctor to point you the needed referrals to solve the physical problems and help you establish the behavioral routines for a healthier sleep.
