This would be useful. Perhaps the current research on electric aoutmobiles will also make this feasible.

I would be nice if, in the event of a power outage, an emergency power supply - built right into the unit - would kick in flawlessly and allow the patient to continue to sleep though the night.

Ideally, it should have enough power to run for three nights without an external power source. However, even an hour would allow me to get through those brief outages without being awakened.
