No experience here with the first paragraph you mentioned. I definitely agree with the velcro idea: soft part larger, rough part away from the skin.

I bet the color coded straps don't sound like much of an idea to a designer without OSA. I can do those straps with my eyes closed and one hand behind my back when fully rested. But I have struggled with those blasted straps more than once while drop-dead tired and incoherent!
