I think that this is the way an oxygen concentrator works (doing with oxygen what you suggest doing with water).

If it's any comfort, the F&P representative said that contaminated water would not rach the patient. After a little badgering, trhey conceded that this applies only to microbes. Toxins are still dangerous.

BTW, using sub-potable water is still "imprudent."
