Most states have standard for how often medical equipment must be inspected. This should apply here too.

My CPAP has a built-in power cord. The solution is to standardize the power-cord for all devices used in a hospital, medical or otherwise (yes, the TV and hair-dryer too). Then you would be provided with a cord that belongs to the hospital. Possibly this could be enforced by a non-standard socket shape (I.E. not one of the thriteen in use around the world).
