Wow! That's one heck of a grass-roots movement---to change the name of CPAP! None the less I never did care for the acronym either. CPAP sounds like "sea Pap" which in turn sounds like we're sleeping with a paternal sailor. Not very flattering to say the least! No offense to fatherly sailors, of course.
Given that we could actually drop enough pamphlets from helicoptors and indoctrinate members of the medical community for such a grass-roots movement, my vote goes for "Velvet Lung". Indeed it sounds like a technical derivative of "Iron Lung" which has garnered much respect in the past. "Iron Lung" is both steeped in medical history and ingrained in most people's memories as being a genuine medical life saver. "Velvet Lung" sounds like a newer, more refined respiratory life saver of sorts, and I think most people will easily remember it.
One poster many forums back referred to their CPAP as a "Dream Machine" and I sort of like that as a slang nickname as well.
