You raise some definate concerns, but I don't believe that they make this an unworkable idea.
The reason for ultrasonic humidification was to eliminate the additional heat from the humidifier, because sometimes "the chilling effect of the air blowing into your nostrils" may be desireable (like when it is already hot). As for rainout, if the air were not being heated by the warm water in the humidifier, the air would not cool off in the tubing, leading to less condensation and less rainout, while still increasing the humidity (though likely not to the same level).
