What's really crazy is that inside the cpap machine there is a power supply that drops the AC line down to 12 volts for the motor and 5v for the circuits. It depends on the circuit, but if you had a schematic you could attach an external DC source directly and bypass the power supply. In other words, it would cost them almost nothing to allow external 12v - just a connector and a source selection switch, and possibly some overvoltage protection.
