We studied a 13 yr old young man last night to r/o OSA (he's a loud snorer with enlarged tonsils and will be going for a T&A, no OSA). Anyway, his teeth grinding during the night was like I've never heard before. He didn't just grind them every now and then, it was more like constant and you could hear it well on the video tape. A couple of times I snuck in the room and stood by his bed to listen and the constant grinding was almost chilling. It didn't seem to wake him up though and he had a lot of slow-wave sleep like we'd expect to see in a child his age. I asked mom if she's ever noticed him grinding his teeth at night and she said he's been doing it for many years although she had never listened to him all night. Has anyone else ever seen this and does anyone know what could cause this? He was a very pleasant, cooperative, courteous, and developmentally normal 13 yr old. Mom said he goes to the dentist twice a year and the dentist has never said anything about his teeth looking abnormal.
The only thing I've ever read about bruxism in children is it's sometimes associated with children who are born prematurely. This boy wasn't premature. Does anyone have any other info to share?
