GHB is approved by the FDA only for cataplexy of narcolepsy. Any other use would be "off label". GHB is basically a potent hypnotic with quick onset. Who knows why it supresses cataplexy. I believe that since narcoleptics have much fragmented sleep and don't get refreshing sleep GHB helps consolidate sleep so it is more satisfying. Narcoleptics get the same sleep time as normal persons but it is scattered throughout the 24 hour period and chaotic, thus the paralysis, REM, dreams, etc. are scattered through the day rather than getting over during the night during normal sleep. These are just my thoughts and may be all wrong.
