REM deprivation

Posted by A.G. Plattermann on December 01, 1997 at 20:02:58:

I have been having a very difficult time staying awake at work or while doing any sedentary activity. A recent sleep study indicated I have hypopnea episodes and some obstructive apneas. The archetecture of my sleep is very disrupted so that I spend most of my sleeping time in Stage 1 sleep and am getting only about 1/4 of the normal REM sleep period.

Can anyone tell me what sort of things are affected by REM deprivation? What sort of problems can result from REM deprivation?

I will be returning to the hospital for a second sleep study to test either CPAP or BPAP.
