Posted by Jim Benz on December 01, 1997 at 20:04:41:I am student trying to write a paper for a class I am taking on child development. The theme of my paper is that public schools should take into consideration the biological sleep patterns of students in order to improve their learning. I believe one way schools could improve learning is to change the time of day when students begin their classes. Most high schools begin earlier in the day than do elementary schools. From what little I have read about sleep patterns, I believe that the younger children should begin school earlier because they are more disposed to being alert earlier in the morning than are high school students which because of their increased sleep needs would benefit from starting school later in the day. I am trying to find research that may support this position but our library is fairly limited on sleep research. Could anyone out there help me with this?
Also, I had heard that there was a high school in the Minneapolis area that was experimenting with this idea, has anyone heard anything about this?
