It depends. Do you have trouble falling asleep but stay asleep after you do fall asleep or is it you can fall asleep but wake up a few hours later and cannot fall back asleep. Different drugs have different half lives. If you are having trouble falling asleep but sleep ok later you want a short acting drug. If you have trouble remaining asleep then you want a longer acting drug. But the number 1 thing is to find out what is causing the difficulty sleeping. Drugs are not a cure and can make a disorder worse. A lot of people with sleep apnea complain of insomnia. Restless legs or periodic limb movements will have the same effect. If it is bad enough for you to ask your doctor about it then it is important enough to see a sleep specialist to see what may be causing it and once treated you may not need anything else.
