I also have type II diabetes, sleep apnea (mild), and just for fun, RLS.

I too had job-related difficulties that caused me to get testing for sleep disorders because of being caught out "sleeping on the job". I have to admit, my initial desire in getting tested was to give myself defensibility from being terminated.

I was forthright with my employer, advised him of the test results, treatment progress, and post-test improvements after treatment. Apparently, that preserved my job. I found out much later that an individual that was seeking my termination that was thwarted by this activity was actively impeding my utility to the organization (I was a consultant and he was a marketing rep that controlled placement of individuals at clients), so I wound up switching employers.

My advice would still be to provide as much information to your employer as possible, and insist that you sleep medicine professional due a follow-up polysomnograph session AFTER treatment has been initiated. Keep copies of both sessions to hand as proof that you have "overcome" your medical problem.

I also use the analogy that a person with sleep disorders is like
a car with a marginal alternator. If you leave the lights on or otherwise drain the battery on the car, the car won't function properly. Likewise, if a person with sleep disorders does not follow all behavioral suggestions (getting proper amounts of sleep, stress reduction, etc.) they WILL have problems related to the sleep disorder.

A final thought concerning your diabetes - I found that my blood sugar control improved vastly upon getting effective sleep disorder treatment - down from over 200 to 110-120 morning fasting levels. You might ask your physicain about Rezulin, a new prescription drug that has dramatic effects for type II diabetes with little side effects. It is a new class of oral medication.
