Most important is to keep the child safe. This may reguire door to be locked with some easy to unlock(for parents) device. Your pediatrician may want to consult with a sleep disorders expert--
perhaps this has already happened. If not --Dr. Richard Ferber-
at Harvard is a leader in this field. There are sleep centers
throughout the country.-- Check SleepNet home page- look for -
sleep labs. In addition to locking the the doors or putting gates near stairs, all potentially dangerous items should be removed from the room. Also monitoring devices --intercoms can be installed in the childs room so parents are awakened at the beginning of the episode and can help guide the child safely back to bed and stay with the child for few minutes until the episode
is over. Video taping the behavior can be very useful for the sleep specialist to have for review.
These kinds of things are common in kids -- but worth evaluating.
