Heavy & frequent sleeper

Posted by Maria on December 07, 1997 at 15:08:49:

I'm a 27 year old female & I've had a sleep problem all my life which oly seems to be getting worse. Firstly, I need an unbelievable amount of sleep, at least 9 hours and most often 10 or more. If I have 2 nights in a row where I don't get enough sleep the next day I'll have flu. My mother used to take my blankets away & tickle me to wake me up because nothing else worked. Now my husband often gets up very early for work & our ensuite is right next to me bed but the alarm, shaver, shower & hairdryer don't wake me & I often have no idea he's even gone. When the alarm goes off I often just sleep straight through it.

Second, I often sleep so heavily that abosolutely *nothing* will wake me. About 7 years ago my cat had kittens on my chest & her crying woke my dad up who was asleep in another bedroom down a passage & around a corner! I've also slept through a fire alarm.

Thirdly, another related problem is that when I DO hear things, I dream that they aren't real and I don't need to wake up. I also often dream that I've looked at the clock & it's not time to get up yet.

Fourth, then there's the sleepwalking which isn't very often but then perhaps I only know about it when I'm woken up while walking into walls etc. I'll dream a floor layout & if I bump into walls the layout changes & eventually I find doors. I almost went to the loo in a pot plant outside once which was VERY embarrasing!

I'm also constantly tired & often sleep for a few hours during the afternoon on weekends (I ALWAYS have to set my alarm or get my husband to wake me though). I'm always tired & lethargic & am constantly battling a weight/water problem.

I'm currently completing a PhD so this is really bugging me right now.

I've had hormone level tests for my thyroid & cortisol production but both were "normal", whatever that means! 1.6 and 133 (midday) resp.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Maria
