Could be anywhere from 8 to 10 hours. Some individuals need more
some need less. Most important question: is sleep sufficient to stay awake and alert during the hours needed to be alert and awake i.e. school. If a 12-13 yr old is falling asleep alot during the day then there is reason to ask questions. Are they getting enough sleep at night? If they get alot of sleep but are still sleepy then there are reasons to ask about the quality of sleep. Any snoring, excessive movement etc.
Most important researcher on this topic is Dr. Mary Carskadon at Brown University. You can search her name in the scientific data bases ( medline ) to get to read her research.
