CPAP - "gulping air"

Posted by Rick E on December 08, 1997 at 07:01:56:

I've been using a CPAP unit, for approximately 8 months now. The machine improved my quality of sleep by 30%, estimates the specialist. I was re-tested, with the machine, revealing a "restless leg" movement and given a presription of clonapin. I felt too drugged and was switched to doxepin.

"Nasal pillows" seem to be the less irritating of any the masks I've tried, but in both instances I gulp air. My specialist has no suggestions, stating that happens in a small percentage of people.

The benefit of using the CPAP outweighs my prior deprivation. Two things are happening. There is extreme abdominal pain, from air building in the stomach. I also awake with air bypassing, being forced out the mouth and nasal passages. Both instances cause me to rip the mask off at night.

Has anyone information or resources I could benefit from?

p.s. I also take 375mgs Effexor(venlafaxine)p/day
