AVERAGE sleep need from age ~20 to ~60 is 8.5 to 9.0 hrs per day. Yes you read that correctly.
Most adults do not get very close to this. Trouble is, figuring out of you are one the average people or not. Try this: how long do you sleep when on vacation or on days off work? If it is longer than when you are working, or if you find yourself needing "catch-up" sleep on days off, then you are not getting enough. Remember the ultimate goal of sleep is to feel refreshed and alert the next day.
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU ARE BORED OR NOT PHYSICALLY ACTIVE? IF YOU ARE GETTING ADEQUATE REST AT NIGHT, YOU CAN BE EXTREMELY BORED AND STILL BE WIDE AWAKE AND ALERT, ANY TIME OF THE DAY EXCEPT RIGHT AT BEDTIME OR DURING "SIESTA TIME" IN THE MID AFTERNOON.
