What is the problem with crying for an hour? It's good exercise for the lungs, and exhausting work, which would help him sleep. I know that it can be sheer torture to YOU,, but what harm to him?
If the method works, (which it does) the crying for an hour will end in only a few days and you will quit allowing the infant to control you psychologically, which will save you much grief later in parenthood. NOTE: this response is not just as a 13 year sleep technologist, but as a 12 year parent too.
