Hi Cindy,
As a sleep study technician (PSGT,) and a massage therapist (LMT,) I see patients with diagnoses of fibromyalgia in both areas. Massage therapy is an effective palliative for FMS, and, of course we see the sleep disturbance of these patients when posysomnographic studies are done, the most notable disturbance being alpha intrusion.
I recommend you continue with your alternative approaches, aiming at muscle and nervous system relaxation. Sleep medicine will be, for you, primarily diagnostic, unless you have sleep apnea, in which case specific treatments for apnea may be prescribed. FMS, and the attendant sleep disturbance, will most likely be treated pharmacologically, and with physical therapy, massage therapy, or any of numerous "non-traditional" approaches.
I am unaware of any organized or institutional cooperation between mainstream medicine and alternative medicine addressing your issue, but there are an increasing number of traditional allopathic professionals who incorporate alternative approaches (now being referred to by many as complimentary therapies,) in healthcare and with some searching, I'm sure you will find practitioners who can incorporate the best of both systems into your care and treatment.
Thanks for the opportunity to respond,
Brian
