graveyard shift

Posted by JBF on December 18, 1997 at 01:59:54:

I am 25 yrs old and for almost 2 years I have worked from 11pm to 7am as a police dispatcher. Initally I could not sleep at all during the day and was diagnosed with depression (for which I am still seeing a counselor). I no longer have the same bouts of depression, but I continue to have difficulty sleeping. It often takes me over an hour to get to sleep and when I do sleep I awake at least 4-5 times. Just recently I have noticed I awake to my arms asleep or tingling (I have not noticed this in my legs). I also find that my body is continually turning and I am very restless, eg. I lie on my back, then my side, then my stomach, then my other side, ect.. My boyfriend also tells me that my body jerks wildly when I start to fall asleep. When I finally wake I am up for a couple hours and then have to nap again before going to work at 11pm. Some days I'll sleep from 8:30am -5pm, get up and eat dinner and then be asleep again on my couch from 7:30pm-9:30pm. My friends seem to think I sleep too much and I don't know if it is the shift I work, or a consequence of the type of sleep I am getting. I have checked with the ASDA and there are no sleep clinics in my area.
