A perspective from someone who was diagnosed and treated for sleep apnea AND PLMD: The sleep medicine center that I was treated at gave me a "good news"/"bad news" perspective on multiple sleep disorders... The bad news is that each individual cause for sleep arousals may be so subtle that it is extremely hard to spot; therefore an individual may have had life-long sleep deprivation and others close to him/her may not be able to spot any overt indicators for the deprivation. The bottom line is the number of arousals (no matter from what triggering mechanism), and with multiple disorders, the effects are additive, that is a mild sleep apnea and mild PLMD add up to a severe sleep deprivation problem. The "good news" is that each component has separate treatment protocols, and the "mild" disorders tend to respond to less drastic treatment more successfully. I have been treated successfully for about 18 months now using a dental appliance for the apnea and medications for the PLMD, and can testify to how much richer life can be when these condiitons are controlled.
