Can't stay awake in the dark, please help.

Posted by Bubba on December 26, 1997 at 11:07:32:

Over the past year, I have developed a problem where I fall asleep within thrity minutes of the lights going out. It doesn't matter how much sleep I've had. I will get sleepy at restaurants, if it's after about 9:30 or 10:00 pm, and it's almost impossible to keep my eyes open, no matter how much noise is around me. Coffe/caffeine doesn't help at all. I have fallen asleep mid conversation with a person before. (Also, I'm almost certain this isn't narcolepsy, I don't really match those symptoms)

I have been diagnosed with depression, but I think that I'm getting better, and these odd symptoms have not abated at all. Also, I think they began slightly before the depression began.

Doctors say that there is nothing wrong with me, but I know there is. I've taken countless blood tests that revealed nothing out of the ordinary.

I need help. I am a psycology student at UCLA and this keeps me from staying awake through class (watching movies). I know this is not normal, especially because I have not always been this way.

One thing that helps me wake up sometimes is having a thought provoking conversation with someone (something I'm very interested in).

Also, I seem to need a more excessive amount of sleep, sometimes 10 to 12 hours before I wake up naturally, even if I've slept the night before. However, if someome actually wakes me up between six and eight hours of sleep, I will probably be able to function normally throught the day, minus being in the dark.

My family and friends have noticed this odd behavior, and are becoming increasingly frustrated with me. I don't know what to do.

I don't know where else to turn. Please send info if you have any ideas about what may be happening to me.

Thank you.

Sincerely,
Bubba
