10 month old son will not sleep through the night

Our 10 month old son does not sleep more than about 3 hours at a time. Some nights he seems to have night terrors while other nights he is just awake. We have had nights where he cries for a while and then gets himself back to sleep, so we know he can do that, but the majority of the time he can't. Our doctors only suggested Tylenol. We don't want to let him "cry it out" alone in his room, there have been nights when he has cried for 2 hours with us holding him. We try to get him to go back to sleep without picking him up, but sometimes that doesn't work.
Also, even if sleeps with us he still wakes and cries. Any suggestions?????
