The "popping" sound is one of the classic indicators of Obstructive Sleep Apnea. Since you do not complain of day-time drowsiness, it's hard to say how serious this is. Re dairy: OSA is usually caused by structural differences in the palate, tongue, jaw position at relaxation, and general structure of the neck region. Overweight individuals are more likely to have it. I would recommend that you take one of the self-tests found on the home page of this site, and follow the dictates of the evaluation. The process of consulting a sleep disorder specialist, and if necessary, a sleep study, is painless and is usually covered by insurance. It also can make a great difference in your life. Good luck!
