Hi Neil, High CPAP pressures can result in air being forced into the esophagus and stomach, which can further result in gastric reflux. Excessive pressures have also been blamed for otitis, conjunctivitis, and sinusitis. Most adults can tolerate pressures up to 18 cm H2O without these occuring. The biggest problem with high pressures is patient compliance with therapy or lack thereof due to discomfort, and difficulties with maintaining adequate seal of the nasal appliance. thanks for the opportunity to respond.
