Anxiety or sleep apnea?

Posted by Joan Litton on January 04, 1998 at 09:19:17:

I have had a sleep problem for six years. I have had two sleep studies. One, in the hospital where I could not fall asleep. I slept only l hour. My normal sleep problem does not involve going to sleep. I don't seem to get quality, deep sleep. The other sleep test was done at home, and it showed high numbers of obstructive sleep apneas averaging 1 per minute. The doctor over the sleep clinic at the hospital will not recognize this test, or do another one. He believes my problem is due to my anxiety. My psychologist has a theory that it is central apnea and does not believe that anxiety would cause such long term sleep loss and deprivation. I don't have any other sources of help. I really don't care what the cause is; I just need the right kind of help and cannot get it. It is a shame to let someone lose their health because they will not have an open mind to other sleep disorder possibilities. When you have a history of anxiety disorder, you don't get any respect. Thank you.
