Hi Doug,

It is not uncommon for people to be slow in coming out of anesthesia after surgery, and sleepiness along with depressed respiratory function can be one symptom of delayed return to normal general function.

It is possible that you have sleep apnea, and you can gain a better idea by investigating some of the self-tests in the sleep links (Sleep Net).

It is also possible that you are anxious about your recent (hospital) experience, and fear that you might stop breathing in your sleep is keeping you wakeful, and limiting your sleep.

You are wise to look into the question, however, and seek professional counsel, as sleep apnea is common among men who are middle-age and older, particularly if they are overweight.
