Gayle, I am a sleep tech and a respiratory therapist. You mentioned asthma. Are you using a humidifier, and if so, is it heated? Most asthmatics are irritated by cold air, but warm air is better tolerated. Also, you might check into a CPAP system that automatically adjusts to changing airway resistance (e.g. Respironics' Virtuoso, Sleepnet Corporations DPAP, etc.). I would make sure I was getting warm, humidified air through the CPAP system first, though. Good luck!
