Unusual Sleep Question???

Posted by Donna Thibedeau on January 16, 1998 at 09:02:05:

Hello all
I am new here and have been reading the posts with
great interest. And I have an unusual question.
When I was a child my father showed me a trick he
could do, he learned this from his mother. The
trick is this - he would watch my mother sleep and
when she had finished a dream he would talk to her
in a low monotone voice, he would ask her questions requiring only a yes or no answer, she
would answer these questions without waking up and
in the morning woud have no memory of the incident
he would also give her a simple command to carry
out the next day, the example I witnessed was he
told her to put the flowers he gave her in a vase
with water, he had not given her flowers. When she
got up in the morning she looked for the flowers
and a vase to put them in. His reason for doing
this, asking the questions, was that he said she
would always tell the truth at this time and was
not able to hold back anything from him, and she
would obey any simple command without resistance.
My question to the experts is this - was what my
father doing a form of hypnosis, at what phase of
the sleep cycle was this occuring, and is it
possible to command a person to forget an event
using this trick.
I once talked to a psychiatrist about this trick
and he told me that I was being paranoid and that
such a thing could never happen.
Any other thoughts or opinions would be welcomed.
Thank you
Donna
