Don't discount anxiety, or panic attack. The night I had my UPPP I awoke with a panic attack feeling like I couldn't breathe. Even hooked up to all the euqipment showing heart rate, pulse, blood gases etc. were fine no one could convince me I was OK. Refused to sleep the next 48 hours. Exhaustion finally took over and now I just try and talk myself out of anxiety situations. There is a book on axiety and phobias that has some good info on what panic attacks are and how to fight them. Their no fun. Good luck.
